Have you ever been recommended by your general physician, friend, or coach to go to physiotherapy, but wasn’t sure what physios do? Well, I am here to clarify this for you and hopefully answer any questions you may have!
Who we are and what we do?
Physiotherapists are health care professionals that help you achieve your physical goals, whether that is to guide your rehab after spraining your ankle when practicing off-ice rotations or understand why you’re getting lower back pain when you land a jump and forming a plan to mitigate the pain. As physiotherapists, we are movement specialists. Our goal is to help restore function, manage pain, and improve your physical well-being through education and movement. We break down movement patterns, assess mobility of joints, and test strength of muscles. We work together to create an individualized treatment plan to guide skaters in achieving their goals.
Why see a sport specific physiotherapist
Finding a physiotherapist who has a good understanding of your sport can be challenging but makes the world of difference. By working with a figure skating specific physiotherapist, they will have a good understanding of your skating level (Star vs Podium Pathway), number of hours training on and off the ice, the demands of performing 5 triples in your program, competition schedule layout, and be able to communicate with your coach with skating specific recommendations to allow for safe training as you recover.
When to see a physiotherapist?
Whether it’s a bad fall you took, or a nagging injury, or you want to learn strategies to decrease your risk of injury, a physiotherapist can help. Physiotherapy can help avoid compensatory patterns when training that may stem from muscle imbalances. Working on more efficient patterns will allow you get the most out of your training sessions on and off the ice. Seeking treatment early is key as recovery from an acute injury is often quicker than a chronic injury.
